Nathan and Everett participated in the Florespa Fencing Club Spring tournament. The club has grown and there were 8 boys in the under 10 age class. Nathan was ready to defend his 3 previous Gold medal club wins. Everett was ready to earn his first gold and let his brother taste silver for the first time.
First there are three qualifying rounds to rank all the fencers based on wins and then points scored. Everett and Nathan won both their first two rounds. Nathan went undefeated 3-0, Everett lost 0-5 to another boy in the club who is also hungry for his first gold medal.
For the semi-final elimination rounds, The first place fences the fourth place. The 2nd and 3rd place fight again to go to the final round. Everett now had to fight the boy he just lost too, for eight points. In the height of the excitement I felt myself turning into the evil Sensei Kreese from the original Karate Kid movie.
I held myself back from shouting, “Sweep the leg!”
I composed myself and started working on my pep talk for Everett. We sat down on the bench and I asked him “Why he fences”? He told me, “To have fun.” As his eyes droop down a bit. “Did you have fun when you fighting out there?” He told me in a sad voice, “No, because I was losing.”
